Mike Fosters A1 Blog: Employee vs outsourcing functions in your ...

Of course we are an external support to businesses, but quite often we are not seen this way and are asked about roles that can be outsourced instead of adding people to the payroll.

So why would you consider using an external resource to support your business rather than employing someone?

  • Your business finances and payroll are sensitive information to protect
  • It provides access to a specialist skill that you in effect add to your team
  • Perhaps frees up time of someone in the business who does not specialise in this area
  • No holiday pay
  • A comparable cost considering Employers NI contribution, sick pay, maternity pay and likely pension contributions from 2013
  • More easily replaced if not performing
  • Less red tape
  • Less cost of ongoing development and training as the providers responsibility
  • And event potentially less desk space
Of course there will be other considerations such as the relationship, management and briefing the specification of work, but outsourcing is now a very real option for business.

Experts blow up 550-pound WWII bomb found in Munich

Police in Munich say experts successfully detonated the remains of a 550-pound bomb from the Second World War on Tuesday evening.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

Updated at 6:56 p.m. ET: MAINZ, Germany -- Nearly 3,000 residents were evacuated from the heart of Munich after construction workers found an undetonated, 550-pound World War II bomb.

The evacuation, which affected several blocks in the busy party district of Schwabing, was ordered by local officials as a routine security measure.

Citing the dapd news agency, The Associated Press?reported that explosives experts detonated the remains of?the?bomb on Tuesday night.?Burning debris from the controlled explosion reportedly caused?fires in several nearby buildings that had been evacuated.

On Monday night,?experts from the Munich bomb disposal squad determined that the explosives were not equipped with a ?normal mechanism,? but a chemical, delayed-action detonator.

"It is an extremely dangerous device," Roman Leitow, a Munich fire department spokesman told NBC News.

?A specialist is presently trying to defuse the bomb with his team,? he added.

Leave immediately
Fire department officials went from door-to-door to enforce the evacuation, after fire trucks had passed through the streets, instructing residents with loudspeaker announcements to leave their homes immediately.

Diethard Posorski, of the bomb disposal team, stands next to an unexploded WW II bomb which was found at a construction site in Munich, Germany, Monday.

Experts from Munich fire department spent most of?Monday night shielding the bomb with sand, bales of straw and other insulating material, which would catch shrapnel and muffle the shock wave in case of an uncontrolled explosion.

Most of the evacuated residents spent the night with friends and family, but about 600 were brought to one of the three temporary shelters set up by in nearby schools by rescue teams. Red Cross workers handed out blankets and drinks.

Massive WWII bomb successfully defused

During World War II, Allied forces dropped nearly 2 million tons of bombs on Germany and experts estimate that between 5 to 15 percent of the bombs did not explode.

Key Aspects For Outsourcing Guides | Backlinkarticles

Sometimes it seems there are hundreds of minute tasks that seem to be a normal part of conducting business online. Marketing on the net is a dynamic environment, and it seems the things that are necessary in order to do successful business just keeps growing. The one solution that has saved many a marketer from the lunatic asylum is outsourcing. Outsourcing allows the IM marketer to focus on those business activities that are directly related to earning money. Realize, though, that outsourcing is a process, and you will need to plan and execute before everything is in place and you start reaping the rewards. Setting up your outsourced project and new hire will take longer than future efforts, and the more you do it the better and easier it becomes. Given below are some workable outsourcing tips for your Internet marketing business.

It?s an often seen practice to ask for samples of work, and outsourced help is used to it and expecting it. If anyone cannot provide you with at least one sample, or preferrably two or more, than it may be prudent of you to keep looking. Your aim is to find someone who has the experience of getting the job done skillfully.

You always want to try to verify the truth about what they say and show you. Not everyone can readily produce references for various reasons, however they may be able to show you testimonials or give you personal references. If anyone cannot provide you with anything at all, then never offer any sort of payment upfront. But the final decision on all matters is yours.

Even though you are paying for the service, it is being done by a service provider and not a regular employee so you must agree on the desired result beforehand. The outcome of your business lies in your hands. The team you manage is under your supervision and it is your responsibility to make sure that the work is being done correctly. This is why you need to ensure that you have complete control over how things are going. You and your business can really benefit by getting this right. Try Check This Out for logical news.

When you start outsourcing your task, it?s important that you keep working with the right people to keep on getting good results. Be sure to treat them well and remember them in case you need more work done. The next step is to look into how you can outsource the other parts of your business and make it more hands free. The more time you can have, the more time you can devote to marketing your business or creating new ones.

It?s a known fact among marketers that outsourcing is a powerful use of leverage. Be sure to communicate very clearly because it will prevent headaches down the road. And before searching on the freelance sites, see if someone can recommend a good professional to you personally.

Mother Grieving Loss of Child - http://mothergrievinglossofchild ...

    Saturday's Sayings

    Yes, I'm Still Grieving...

How to help those who are grieving, whether it was months ago, a year ago or years ago.

Grief has no clear beginning or end. It is a journey that will ebb and flow for the rest of our lives. We never get over the death of someone we love. We somehow find a way to live with it. It is important to let the bereaved know that they are allowed to grieve for as long as needed. Till that time comes. Where they are able to remember the one that has died, without feeling pain.

?Sympathy is two hearts tugging at one load.?

    TRY NOT TO?

Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve there is no right or wrong way to support. There are however some things which should be avoided in saying, as these can be hurtful and minimize their loss.

Try not to say you know how they feel. No two griefs will be the same and each grief is as unique as the relationship they shared with the person they have lost.

Don?t tell them they have to be strong. It is in the depths of grief that we are at our most vulnerable.

Don?t tell them they need to get on with life. Life as they knew it is not the same and they will need to learn how to live their life without the person who has died. This takes time.

Don?t say they had a good life, they are at peace now or you are lucky to have had them for so long. No one feels lucky to lose someone they love.

Don?t say it is God's way, the natural order of things or nature?s way. Logical explanations are cold comfort when you are grieving.

It is not comforting to remind the bereaved that at least they had a chance to say goodbye to the deceased. We never want to say goodbye to those we love.

Be mindful when telling the bereaved they are coping well. They may appear to be coping but it does not mean they have stopped hurting and are done grieving.

Do not compare their grief to others or make suggestions that someone else?s loss was greater. This will only make the bereaved feel their loss is not a significant one and that they do not have the right to grieve.

Don?t tell them they are grieving the wrong way or make suggestions about how they should be dealing with their grief.

Just be there, with a hug, a comforting hand or an open ear. Invite them over often even if they say no. Invite them on special occasions where their loss is so completely overwhelming. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Mother?s Day, Father?s Day, Christmas, etc.

?Sometimes there are no perfect words. Only thoughtful silences that whisper softly of caring.?

Pass this along to someone who is grieving, or to guide someone whose friend/family member is grieving. Remember the stronger the relationship, the harder the grief is. If there are multiple losses in a short period of time, the more painful the grief. Most importantly don?t expect them to ?be the same? as they were before the loss, they will never be the same.?

Since my Grief journey, I have noticed...

The ones who know the least have the most to say!

    ~~~~~
    ~~~~~

    He Gathers Every Teardrop

    Regardless of the circumstance,

    Regardless of the (fear),

Regardless of the pain we bear,

    Regardless of the tear,

Our God is ever in control,

    Performing as He should,

And He has promised in His Word

To work things for our good.

But as a loving Father would,

    He sometimes lets us cry

To cleanse the hurt out of our heart,

To wash it from our eye.

Yet gently He gathers the tears

    Within His hands to stay

Until He turns them into pearls

    And gives them back someday.

    Feathers for Muma

Hello baby, can you hear me?

I so want to talk to you,

I'm walking under my favourite tree,

Baby, give me a sign, if you do.

A little white feather just floated by,

It must be a sign from you,

Oh baby, I think I'm going to cry,

Baby boy, you heard me, it's true.

I'm holding my feather, my sweet,

My baby, my treasure, my own,

To know you hear me, is a treat,

It stops me from feeling alone.

I walk in my place full of peace,

I can talk to you now in my head,

It gives me such a release,

To deal with the fact you are dead.

Dead, such a hard word to say,

Asleep is a much nicer word,

I think of you now in this way,

No better word, have I heard.

My folks say, "Why are you crying?"

"It happened two months ago now."

Well folks, I'm so sorry, I'm trying,

But my heart is broken, and how.

So baby, under these trees I walk,

Here no-one can hear my pain,

And baby I am free just to talk,

And feel close to you again.

I treasure the feathers you send me,

Plucked from your wings, so far above,

And drifting right down through the trees,

To remind me, of your sweet love.

I guess, I should go home soon,

My heart is now full of peace,

Tonight when I look at the moon,

I'll smile, blow a kiss, feel released.

My pain, I know it will fade one day,

And I'll be able to laugh once more,

And that feather, in my jewel box will stay,

To hold when my heart's feeling sore.

I thank God above, that He gave me,

A child for a while, just to hold,

And know that one day I will be,

Walking with you on streets of gold.

The Mention Of My Child's Name

The mention of my child's name

... may bring tears to my eyes,

but it never fails to bring music to my ears.

If you are really my friend,

let me hear the beautiful music of her name.

    It soothes my broken heart

    And sings to my soul.

    Letter to Heaven

I write to you, in heaven
I'm not sure where I should start
The tear stained words I send to you
    are from my broken heart

You taught the world true kindness
and you were always there for me
    you taught the world happiness
and that laughter was the key

My letter is far too short
    I'm struggling, thats the truth
the world it seems so painful
    and empty without you

I call upon your loved ones
and each person signs their name
    for these many tearful people
the world won't feel the same

We seal the letter with a kiss
and send it on its way
then out of the blue, We hear your voice
here are the words you want to say

    (PAUSE FOR A SECOND)

My loved ones, I have heard you
before your pen began to write
my soul is with you every day
and through the dark of night

    Although I am in heaven
It doesn't mean that I am gone
Take a look around and see
    my spirit still lives on

When the stars shine at night
my heart is what you see
and when you dream, gentle dreams
your heart is here with me

Don't worry if your heart feels hurt
with my help, the pain will ease
don't worry if you need to cry
i'll help to dry your tears

Please celebrate the life we shared
    to your memories, I belong
and talk about the good times
it makes my soul burn strong

If for now you don't believe
I'll still keep you safe from harm
until the day we meet again
and I take you in my arms

LONDON (AP) ? As far as Usain Bolt is concerned, it's a done deal.

"I'm a legend now," he said.

But these Olympics aren't quite finished. And neither is he.

With the 200-meter gold medal in his pocket after a winning run of 19.32 seconds Thursday night, The World's Fastest Man now gets ready for the 4x100 relay. If he can lead the Jamaicans to a victory there, he'll be 3 for 3 at these Olympics, same way he was in Beijing four years ago.

He'll likely get a day off Friday for the preliminaries, then head back to the track Saturday for the final ? his last chance to set a world record, the only thing to elude him over a very fast week at the London Olympics.

The relay mark is 37.10 seconds, the third of three records Bolt set, or helped set, at the Beijing Games.

"I think there's a possibility," Bolt said. "But you can never really say it, because it's a relay and there's a baton. You never know. But for me, we're going to go out, enjoy ourselves, run fast as possible. It would be a good way to close the show again."

What a show he put on Thursday night.

Bolt opened the night, during introductions, by giving a royal wave to the 80,000 fans at Olympic Stadium on hand to see some history.

Then, he ran a race fit for a king.

Burning off the starting line, he took an early lead, then powered around the curve. By the time he reached the straightaway, only Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake had any chance to catch him. Blake actually closed the gap for a moment, but then Bolt reached back and found that fastest gear ? the one that has helped him become the first man to win the Olympic 100-200 double twice.

Blake finished second in 19.44 seconds and Warren Weir completed the Jamaican sweep, winning bronze in 19.84.

"The guy is just on another planet right now," Wallace Spearmon, the American who finished fourth, said between sobs of disappointment.

Bolt was comfortably ahead at the finish, so much so that he was able to slow down, put his left finger to his mouth and tell everyone to shush. It was less than six weeks ago that Bolt lost twice to Blake at Jamaica's Olympic trials and the world wondered if Bolt's days of dominating were over.

"That was for all that people that doubted me, all the people that was talking all kinds of stuff that I wasn't going to do it, I was going to be beaten," Bolt said. "I was just telling them: You can stop talking now, because I am a legend."

Another legend, Carl Lewis, has 10 Olympic medals ? won in individual races, relays and the long jump over a span of four Olympics ? and it's possible Bolt, who has whimsically spoken about trying the long jump, might want to look at reaching that number some day, too. He clearly has no love for Lewis. In the only awkward moment of an otherwise-engaging news conference, Bolt lashed out at Lewis, saying the American spends too much time casting aspersions about the possibility that the Jamaicans are dopers.

"Carl Lewis, I have no respect for him," Bolt said. "The things he says about the track athletes is really downgrading for another athlete to say something like that."

But this was no day for bickering. It was a giant celebration.

The win sealed, Bolt took a meandering victory lap that included some old fan favorites ? his archer-like "To The World" pose ? and some new ones ? borrowing a photographer's camera and taking a few pictures. He also banged out five pushups on the track, one for each of the gold medals he has won.

While Bolt won his fifth career gold on the track, the Americans were piling them up in other corners of the stadium.

They went 1-2 in the decathlon (Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee) and triple jump (Christian Taylor and Will Clay), raising the U.S. total to 24 medals, one more than what they won in Beijing, with three days to go.

"It's infectious," U.S. men's coach Andrew Valmon said. "When you think about coming in, we had one team meeting. We made it about the athletes and talked about what we needed to do, heard the message one time, embraced it and took on the challenge."

There was one world record established: David Rudisha of Kenya won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 40.91 seconds, improving his own standard by 0.10.

Hoping to hone in on a little slice of the Bolt magic, Rudisha served up the prospect of a showdown over 400 meters against the Jamaican, who used to run that distance but abandoned it because it was too much of a grind.

Bolt was more than happy to handicap that potential race.

"I think if I train, I can take Rudisha over 400 meters," he said.

    Maybe someday.

But the goal heading to London was to become a "living legend," and while he's making a pretty good case for himself, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said it's too early to make such determinations.

"The career of Usain Bolt has to be judged when the career stops," said Rogge, who criticized the Jamaican four years ago for showboating by slapping himself on the chest at the finish of the 100.

"Let him participate in three, four games, and he can be a legend," Rogge added. "Already he's an icon."

An icon the Olympics would love to keep around.

Almost single-handedly, Bolt has helped track transform itself from a dying sport to one with a singular, smiling, worldwide star.

He turns 26 this month, however, and didn't sound completely sold on sticking around through the Rio Olympics in 2016.

"It's going to be a hard mission," he said.

But before he worries about that, there is more business to take care of at these Olympics.

"Tonight, all I've got to do is go home and rest," he said. "I've got the 4-by-1 coming up, and after that on Saturday, I'll party like it's my birthday."

12 Companies With Online Solutions for Big Offline ... - The Next Web

Innovation looks different from industry to industry ? some new products improve current processes while others completely disrupt them, challenging the way we see situations we?ve put up with for so long.

As online and offline world continue to collide, more and more companies are harnessing the possibilities of the web to solve offline problems. These businesses are providing tangible solutions to daily frustrations with a little WiFi and a lot of innovative thinking.

I asked a panel of successful young entrepreneurs the following question:

What?s the greatest example you?ve seen recently of a company using technology to solve an offline problem?

Ten startup owners shared which businesses are using the Internet to make a positive difference for others in real life:

Thursday Bram 12 companies with online solutions for big offline problems1. IFTTT and Belkin Both Help

IFTTT provides a ton of different ways to automate online tasks we all deal with every day. The startup recently announced an integration with Belkin?s WeMo system, which means that you can control real-world outlets and timers with triggers like SMS or email.

    - Thursday Bram, Hyper Modern Consulting

Lane Sutton 12 companies with online solutions for big offline problems2. Boloco Listens to IRL Problems

I see customers take a problem online for a quick and effective customer service response. Updates are visible and a company doesn?t want its reputation damaged, so they resolve the problem positively. Boloco had a customer who got a $65 parking ticket while getting a free burrito. He tweeted about it and Boloco paid the ticket! Totally irrelevant, but went the extra mile!

COMMENTARY | As a registered Republican living in the heart of Pennsylvania in Lancaster County, I couldn't be more pleased with the choice of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate.

A strict fiscal and social conservative, the 42-year-old Ryan has looked more than comfortable interacting with the Republican presidential nominee over recent months. More importantly, Ryan has repeatedly been in attack mode against President Obama on the issues of the size of government and national debt. In my view, this choice unquestionably unites the right and the tea party, providing Romney with a strong base to work from.

But is that base going to be big enough in the key swing states necessary for the Republicans to take the White House this November?

Will seniors in Florida embrace Ryan, who is often painted by Democrats as a enemy of Medicare? Will the unions in Ohio be weary of him given his association with Gov. Scott Walker in his home state of Wisconsin? Will Pennsylvanians see his stance as an opponent of abortion as anti-women? Will Colorado residents interpret his position on gay marriage as draconian?

All are very tough questions which will play out over the next couple of months.

"Paul Ryan is an authentically dangerous zealot," reported Esquire.com this morning. Combine that rhetoric with the "pushing grandma over the cliff" images the left has stressed when portraying fiscal conservatives and it's easy to see where Democrats plan on attacking the GOP and the newly formed Romney-Ryan team.

I admire Paul Ryan. As a fiscal and social conservative myself, I find him exceptionally easy to embrace. His desire to balance budgets, reduce debt, and strengthen the military are all core beliefs I share with the vice-presidential nominee.

I wonder, however, how many Americans will feel the same way. Is Ryan too conservative for mainstream America?

"President Obama is part of the problem," said Ryan Saturday morning in Virginia. "Mitt Romney is the solution. It's our duty to save the American Dream."

To the right, he speaks the truth. But whether or not that message will resonate with enough independent voters in swing states this November to make a difference could be a stretch.

This $4000-per-jar caviar has socialist roots

Some top chefs believe a kibbutz in Israel is now producing the world's best caviar. NBC News' Paul Goldman reports.

    By Paul Goldman, NBC News

KIBBUTZ DAN,?Israel -- More than seven decades after being founded based on socialist ideals, an Israeli kibbutz is producing the most capitalist of foods.

Caviar fetching $4000 for a two-pound jar is being shipped more than 5,600 miles away to be served at some of New York's finest restaurants.

The kibbutz movement was born as an alternative way of living based on socialist values.?

Eastern European immigrants formed these agricultural communities with the dream to settle the Holy Land. They had strict rules including communal sleeping for children, communal eating rooms and no personal profit -- meaning everyone is equal.

As Israel developed into the "nation of start-ups," the kibbutz found itself in an existential dilemma. How do you survive with socialist ideals in the digital age? And how do you persuade youngsters to stay and not move to cities?

    ?

    The answer was simple: Adapt.

    Stubbornness, hard work
Yigal Ben Zvi is a member of Kibbutz Dan who decided to take matters into his own hands. With the help of eight workers, he now produces some of the best farmed caviar in the world.

    Ronen Zvulun / Reuters

A sturgeon is thrown into a bucket before it is examined by a biologist at a the firsh farm at Kibbutz Dan in northern Israel on May 14.

It's a mix of stubbornness and?hard work that helped Ben Zvi thrive.

Two decades ago, Ben Zvi was raising goldfish when he looked for a new way to develop the kibbutz business.

Overfishing in the the Caspian and Black Seas then brought the sturgeon to the brink of extinction, which resulted in a U.N. ban on fishing there.

Ben Zvi stepped in to fill the vacuum, importing the sturgeon to Israel and starting to raise them. Kibbutz Dan now boasts more than 60,000 sturgeon and produces about 6,000 pounds of caviar annually.

"The good chefs in New York are saying that our caviar -- Karat Caviar -- is the best in the world -- and we believe them," he told NBC News.

However, Ben Zvi can't speak from personal experience. Kibbutz members can't enjoy the caviar because it's not kosher.

FTC and facebook settle privacy dispute

Well, Mark Zuckerberg is finally trying to make things right after admitting to a "bunch of mistakes" when dealing with user privacy on his juggernaut of a social network. The FTC and Facebook had agreed to settle the dispute in November, and now the final details of the deal have been ironed out. Noticeably missing from the list of concessions is cash. The government isn't asking Facebook to cough up any dough as part of the settlement -- avoiding the sort of hefty fine that Google recently found itself on the wrong end of. The company will, however, have drastically revamp how it handles user data and subject itself to privacy audits every two years for 20 years. Customers will now be provided with "clear and prominent" warnings any time information is shared. And, before anything can be shared, users must give express consent to for that information to be distributed. Ideally, these measures would have been in place on day one, but we'll take what we can get at this point. For more details, check out the FTC's press release after the break.

Farmers dig deep, water tables drop, competition heats up

A drier 'new normal' is forcing US farmers to dig deeper wells. That affects water tables and municipal supplies, and, if climatologists are right about global warming, it could also mean more competition for less water in the future.

    Hunt of the Bound

Slavery is not uncommon in Tarsha...it is expected, however loss of freedom is not the worst that can happen. The BloodOath ceremony is coming up, will you be a Hunter or Bound? Who will be the required sacrifice?

Welcome to "Hunt of the Bound"
    .

Thankyou for viewing my roleplay, and I hope you will consider taking part.
Here feel free to make reservations, ask questions and discuss the roleplay.

Please note, this is a literate, and advanced rp, so I will be rather strict on character profiles. My own characters stand as examples of what I am expecting. Since this is literate (again, pointing this out (: ) roleplay, if you are not willing/prepared to write around 600 words for each of your posts, please don't join.
About the reservations, they last 24hours and people can reserve the same character and compete if needed.

Also, if you are considering playing a popular part (these are usually the Bound, and maybe a runaway), you may want to consider taking up another role. We cannot/will not start without Hunters, and someone has to do these parts. Also, they can be played how you like, the Hunters are slaves too, and do not necessarily want to take part in the ceremony but are forced. Of course a few harsh hunters also add interest to the roleplay :)

Make sure you check out the "Places" and "NPC" OOC topics as well!

She's reserved for you :) Just make sure you've read the plot, rules, places and npc's before you submit her :)

I'm quite interested. How do you feel about me taking two hunters, one male one female? I just feel that way it'll be easier for me to make the kind of size posts you're asking.g for without too much internalisation. But I'd give one of the slots up if enough players came along to fill them. How's that sound?

That sounds really good :) Just looking at your previous characters and I am looking forward to seeing the new ones (I normally check a persons previous characters before I reserve them to make sure they are literate).

FILE - This undated file photo provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows Sikh temple shooter Wade Michael Page. The FBI said Wednesday, Aug 8, 2012, that Page died of a self-infliced wound after he was shot by police. (AP Photo/FBI, File)

Teresa L. Carlson, FBI special agent in charge in Milwaukee, speaks at a press briefing about the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 in Milwaukee. "We have not identified anyone else responsible for the shooting and we have not identified a motive," Carlson told the news conference. (AP Photo/Tom Lynn)

(AP) ? There's no trial to prepare, no jury to persuade, no judge to hand down a sentence.

Wade Michael Page is dead, having shot himself in the head after killing six people at a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee. Although detectives have interviewed more than 100 people, combed through Page's email and recovered hundreds of pieces of evidence from his residences to the temple, their findings might never be presented in court.

Federal investigators are developing theories but also may never know for certain why he chose to attack total strangers in a holy place.

"We're trying to piece together, and eventually we will piece together as much as we can," said Steven Conley, assistant agent in charge of national security for the FBI in Milwaukee. "We will have a good idea of the motive by the time this investigation is done. But again, why that building, that temple, at that time, that may have died with Page."

At the moment, detectives are sifting through the gunman's life, assembling the biography of a man who apparently had few relatives, a spotty work history and a thin criminal record. The FBI's special agent in charge in Milwaukee, Teresa Carlson, said investigators haven't linked anyone else to the attack or found any kind of note left by Page.

Still, the Sikh community holds out hope.

"We just want to get to the bottom of what motivated him to do it," said Amardeep Singh, an executive with the New York-based Sikh Coalition. "It's important to acknowledge why they lost their lives."

Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran, opened fire with a 9 mm pistol at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin shortly before Sunday services. The dead included temple President Satwant Singh Kaleka, who was shot as he tried to fend off Page with a butter knife.

Page shot a responding police officer at least eight times in the parking lot before another officer wounded him. Police initially said the officer killed Page, but Carlson said Wednesday that Page shot himself in the head after he was hit and died of that wound.

A native of Littleton, Colo., Page had a record of minor alcohol-related crimes in Texas, Colorado and North Carolina. He was demoted during a stint in the Army for getting drunk on duty and going AWOL before he was discharged in 1998. Page eventually moved to Wisconsin, living in South Milwaukee with a girlfriend and working third-shift at a brazing factory in Cudahy, another Milwaukee suburb.

Neighbors said the couple broke up this past spring. Page moved into a Cudahy duplex in mid-July and quit showing up for work around the same time. A few days after he moved into the duplex, he visited a West Allis gun shop and, after clearing background checks, bought the gun he used in the shooting.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has described Page as a "frustrated neo-Nazi" who participated in the white-power music scene, playing in bands called Definite Hate and End Apathy.

Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education, said even though Page is dead, other white-supremacy and neo-Nazi groups could harbor similar intentions.

"Our concern is, how do we tackle these hate groups operating underground or in darkness?" he said.

The FBI has classified the incident as domestic terrorism, a violent act for social or political gain. The FBI's Carlson said though investigators have not yet determined what drove Page over the edge or that anyone nudged him along the way, they continue to search to make sure.

Investigators probably will collect all bullets and fragments from the temple and the victims' bodies to confirm they came from Page's gun. Detectives also will pore over witness statements to make absolutely certain he was the only shooter, said Joe LeFevre, chairman of the forensic science department at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton.

Authorities are interviewing Page's family, friends and associates. Agents spent Monday morning doing a door-to-door sweep on his street, chatting with neighbors on their front porches and in their backyards.

"It's like any crime," said Jack Ryan, a Rhode Island attorney who trains police around the country. "You focus on their recent tracks. You focus on friends, acquaintances. He had to get ready for this plot somewhere."

The investigation could take weeks or longer. But Page's motive is the key.

If detectives determine Page simply held a personal grudge, the Sikhs and the rest of the public will have an answer. If investigators conclude he was motivated by racist ideology, that might lead police to accomplices, help collect intelligence on white supremacist groups and prevent future attacks.

Page's girlfriend, 31-year-old nursing student Misty Cook, faced some legal trouble herself, though Carlson said Wednesday that her arrest over the weekend was not connected to the shootings. Cook was arrested on a weapons violation Sunday after investigators interviewed her about Page, but Carlson said she was cooperative and was quickly released.

South Milwaukee police had said Cook was taken into custody on a tentative charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Milwaukee County sheriff's spokeswoman Fran McLaughlin said Cook also went by the name Brenda Cook. Online court records show Brenda Cook pleaded no contest in 2005 to a felony charge of fleeing an officer.

The voicemail on Cook's cellphone was full and wouldn't accept a message. However, in regard to the shooting, she told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in an email: "If I could say something to ease the pain of the victims and their families, I would gladly do so. Unfortunately, words do not begin to heal the pain they are going through."

No matter how thorough the investigation, the final conclusions are bound to leave victims with many of the same anguish-filled questions.

"Whatever the answer is, we can be reasonably sure it won't be an answer many people would say makes sense to them," said University of Wisconsin-Madison law professor Michael Scott, who is writing a guidebook for police on hate crimes.

"We'd like to have some peek into that twisted mind. But in the end, it's still a peek into a twisted mind that doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know about human nature."
